An Exciting Summer

Jerry Low arrived this week for his summer music mission. He'll be training young people in the art of worship and in guitar and keyboard lessons. It's all a bit of an unknown at this time, but we do know there is a huge need for this kind of music ministry. In fact, I've been running into others lately that have been setting up similar ministries and music training centers. It seems that it is God's time is to develop this area of the church more.  It should be an exciting summer indeed!

Church Sends Out "M" to Khmer Rouge

Yesterday, our church laid hands on a young man who will be going to preach the gospel to the remnants of the Khmer Rouge in northwestern Cambodia. The KR are all but gone now, but there are some villages were they are still revered and there are some holdouts.  These villages are near the Thai border and not safe for tourists.

Here's a link to a recent CNN article about people who worship the grave of Pol Pot, the KR's former leader who oversaw the deaths of 1.7 million people. http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/04/16/polpot.cambodge.ap/index.html

[In October there will be another rally and a mass baptism service.]

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving this year was certainly different for us. We were in North Carolina with Paul's mom and brother Dean. Not only has it been 5 years since we've seen them, it was a completely new place for us. Both had moved to NC a couple of years ago. It was our first time to ever visit there. Fortunately, it wasn't too cold that week.

It was very wonderful to spend time with them and for Noah and Sonya to see their cousins again. Dean has a pinball machine. It was the first time Paul has ever really had an extended chance to play. Noah and Sonya had some serious bonding time with Xbox.

Third Time's a Charm

As the saying goes, "third time's a charm". That's how my third LASIK procedure went on my right eye. The left eye was ok as is and is currently set for improved reading.

I was hesitant to call the doctor after 5 years, but glad that I did. I figured I at least needed a check up and maybe a prescription for glasses. Oh, dread the thought of wearing glasses again. I was afraid it might be costly as well. It turns out that the doctor has substantially reduced fees for previous patients. During my visit, I mentioned to the doctor that I never received my full number of follow-up visits because I left the country beforehand. He responded that he would adjust my right-eye at no charge. Amen to that! And boy did he hit a home run. My distance vision is now wonderful.

Hillsong London in Phnom Penh

After almost being shut down by the government, the first-ever Hillsong London praise concerts were allowed to go forward. In a last minute negotiation, the venue was changed, but the impact was not. Reports are that it was a truly exciting event. One that I wish I was able to attend.

God is Good

God continues to take such wonderful care of us. We have been blessed by our stay with the Shorts. We like it so much we would like to stay here our until we head back to Cambodia in January. But in August we'll move over to the mission house at College Avenue Baptist Church, San Diego - our home church. That will also we a wonderful blessing too and the Shorts can get back to their routines. We've stayed there before and really loved it. We are so thankful for all of your prayers and how good God is to us.

Paul's DVD video turned out very nice. Thank you for your constant prayers. One little snag is that some players he encounters won't play home-made DVD's. But he's got a spare DVD player that he can through in the car just in case.

We also want to let you know that we're getting along with Mai's mom very well so far. Paul is getting along with her better than ever before. Another example of how God answers your prayers.

Sustaining Prayers

As we were reflecting somewhat on our first term here we couldn't help but be in awe at God's grace that has surrounded us and protected us the past several years. Of course, we believe this is the direct result of all your prayers on our behalf. There are times when we can only trust in God to deliver us; times when we are almost too overcome to pray ourselves, but we know that God sees us through because of your prayers.

We can think back to when we first arrived and some of those Christian leaders that we admired. Yet, two have fallen into sin and had to leave the ministry. We see other families without strong support teams that struggle with the attacks of the enemy day to day. Many families and singles only last a short time on the field and have to leave. We praise God for the wisdom he gave to the BGC and our home church College Avenue Baptist Church in San Diego for having us put in place a strong prayer support team before we are allowed to leave for the field.

And of course, we are overjoyed to know that so many faithfully pray for us; for our well being, health and spiritual protection. Without those faithful prayers, we could not serve here as we have and we certainly could not prosper the way that God has allowed to prosper.
