January 2008 Arrived Safe in CambodiaMany people have asked us how long it takes to get to Cambodia. We never really timed it before. It just felt like forever. Well for those who want to know, door-to-door from San Diego to Phnom Penh was 29 hours of travel time. God was good to us. Nearly all aspects of our travel went very smoothly. All our luggage arrived with us. Immigration and getting new visas upon arrival went very smoothly. I was impressed at their new "friendlier" attitudes. The only thing that didn't meet my expectations was that I didn't sleep on the plane as much as I had hoped. During our ride home from the airport, Sonya was beaming to be here. I was very glad that she feels so at home here. Noah's been busy setting up his Heroscape world (a game he brought from the US). Hopefully, he'll have a friend to play it with him. We are loving our new, larger apartment and are busy moving around furniture and unpacking the 100 or so boxes that were waiting for us. Most are put away at this point. The first night Mai and I were up at 2 am so we unpacked until we fell asleep at 6:30 am. The kids seem immune to jet lag and slept all night and woke up about 8 am. How do they do that? The pet budgies and Xixor the turtle arrived yesterday. Sonya was quite pleased. Xixor grew quite a bit. Our landlords were very happy to see us, especially grandma. She was next door at the work site of their new apartment building and we called out to her and she came hobbling over to visit with us. The new apartment will be 9 floors and have a pool and exercise room. The landlord said we could use them. I guess it will take a year or more for the building to be finished. It should provide some nice afternoon shade. Construction is right outside our window. The one unpleasant thing we're dealing with is all the air pollution. It seems worse than before and gave us instant sore throats. It's mostly from people burning trash and vegetation. On the bright side, it's not too hot. The kids start school today at a new school called Hope International School. The van will be here in an hour and a half to pick them up (I woke up at 4 am today- a great improvement). |
